Music History Webring

I stumbled upon a Music History Webring. I don't know much (i.e. anything) about webrings, but this struck me as an interesting way of pulling things together and encouraging study.

If you don't like being bombarded by adverts, look away.

But if you don't mind Haydn sitting next to "cut away lbs of fat off your body" etc., you'll find the music history webring here.

Large scale digitisation - moral and legal dilemmas

Unique, primary documents have a lot in common, whether they be audiovisual, manuscript, or even some artworks.

There is an interesting post or two on hangingtogether.org, in specific relation to manuscript collections, but what is said reverberates into other areas.

A unique music tradition

Dr Aled Lloyd Davies, an expert in, and exponent of, the unique tradition of penillion singing (Cerdd Dant), will celebrate the art at the DRWM at the National Library of Wales on Thursday 5 March. He'll be accompanied by Llio Penri on pedal harp.

The evening is arranged by the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, which preserves the majority of sound recordings related to this singularly Welsh tradition.

FOCAL awards

Focal International have announced the full submission list for their 2009 awards.

There seem to be few entries for restorations this year. However "the few" include the David Lean project (8 feature films) from the bfi. And of course there is a little Welsh gem of a film, restored by John Reed of the NSSAW, "Memoirs of a Pit Orchestra", (Richard Watkins).

silent in your living room

The lost silent masterpiece "The Life Story of David Lloyd George" is now available on DVD from the National Library of Wales.

The film, made in 1918 was "lost" for 70 years before being discovered and restored by the Wales Film and Television Archive (now the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales).

The 2 disc DVD features music composed and performed by Neil Brand, together with an introduction by Philip Madoc, interviews about the music with Neil, and about the historical perspective by Kevin Brownlow.

The DVD is available from the National Library shop (+44 [0]1970 632 548).

NSSAW news

The National Library of Wales has now loaded 200,000 catalogue records for off-air recordings (radio and TV programmes from The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales onto their integrated library management system.

This is the first time that these records have been made available online, and the migration marks a second major step in improving access to NSSAW collections. Another recent step-change was achieved with the mapping to MARC21, and the subsequent migration of film holdings onto the ILMS.

One of life's great pleasures, to dream of better weather, exotic travel, wonderful company. If only...

in September IASA conference in Athens

in May FIAF congress in Buenos Airies...

And why is IASA always so well organised, focussed and efficient, in comparison with "some" other organisations, despite not having staff etc? And they're comparatively cheap to join.

Locked-up for 95 years

Some info on the dreaded EU 95 year extension for sound recordings. They are now proposing an impact assessment to extend this to all AV.
"The Commission should launch an impact assessment procedure in relation to the situation of the European audiovisual sector in order to consider the need for an extension of the term of protection of copyright to producers and broadcasters in the audiovisual sector; that procedure should be completed by 1 January 2010 so that a proposal for a new directive may be presented before June 2010."

Unfit for purpose

Is copyright fit for purpose in the information age?
The Society of Archivists is joining with CILIP to present the above Executive
Briefing in Manchester on 28th April 2009. The briefing will look at the development
of copyright law and practice in the UK and Europe in relation to electronic
materials and uses from the point of view of rights owners, public information
professionals and users since the implementation of the Information Society
Directive in 2003. It will also consider the likely future development of copyright
in light, for instance, of the proposals for implementation of the recommendations
of the Gowers Review, the European Commission's Green Paper on Copyright in the
Knowledge Economy, the draft directive on the term of copyright in sound recordings
and performances, and proposals to deal with orphan works.

Images from the playground

One for Bergman fans...

The Ingmar Bergman Foundation presents Images from the Playground (2009), a new
compilation film containing unique and never before seen material from nine of
Ingmar Bergman's behind-the-screens films, from Sawdust and Tinsel to Persona. The
film is produced with the support of World Cinema Foundation, the film preserving
organization led by Martin Scorsese.

Images from the Playground is the first in a series of two films - written and
directed by Stig Björkman - including recordings of Bergman's voice, newly recorded
interviews with actors Harriet Andersson and Bibi Andersson, and a special
introduction by Martin Scorsese.

- Images from the Playground is no regular behind-the-screens film. Apart
from providing a rich and playful insight to Bergman's creative universe, it is its
own creation, with high artistic quality. Also Martin Scorsese is very pleased with
the work that Stig Björkman has completed, says Ingrid Dahlberg, CEO of Ingmar
Bergman Foundation.

Images from the Playground will be screened for the first time at Cannes Film
Festival, May 13-24, in connection with World Cinema Foundation's regular premiere
screenings. The film will have its national premiere during Ingmar Bergman
International Theatre Festival at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, where
Ingmar Bergman Foundation is hosting two international seminars on May 28-29.

The behind-the-screens material is a part of the collection that Bergman donated to
Ingmar Bergman Foundation in 2002 and since 2007 registered on UNESCO's "Memory of
the World".

Author and director Stig Björkman has published interview books on Ingmar Bergman,
Lars von Trier and Joyce Carol Oates. He has also directed the interview film Ingmar
Bergman (1971), from the shooting of The Touch.
